Originally trained in animation, Whelan studied photography (BA) at IADT Dún Laoghaire and fine art (MA) at the University of the Arts, London. His artworks have been exhibited at institutions, project spaces and galleries including (selection): Dhaka Art Summit; MAK Museum, Vienna; Kunsthall Stavanger; Centre Pompidou, Metz; Jameel Arts Centre, Dubai; Kunsthall Stavanger and Museum Bochum. His films have been screened at (selection): DOC NYC; IFI Documentary Festival; Labocine, New York; Galway Film Fleadh; Dublin International Film Festival; Aesthetica Film Festival; Museum Bochum; Kiasma Museum; TULCA Festival of Visual Arts, Ireland and Kunstverein Bremerhaven. His work is part of the collections of the Arts Council of Ireland, the University of the Arts, London, and the IADT Dún Laoghaire collection. He has had two books published: The sun shone on the nothing new published by Lismore Castle Arts, Ireland, and Red Sky Morning published by Argobooks, Germany. He won the Stiftung Kunstfonds Project Award, the Arts Council Reel Art Award and most recently, the Screen Wicklow Short Film Award.
